Pediatric Eye Exams

You may not realize your child has vision problems. In fact, your child may have eye problems such as convergence insufficiency, amblyopia, strabismus, and refractive errors and you might not even know it. The good news is that an optometrist on our team at Vision Solutions in La Mesa, CA, can provide pediatric eye exams to detect vision issues in your child and can also give you advice about how to protect your child's eyes in everyday life.

Pediatric Eye Exams

Kids Can Perform Better in School

If your child has trouble with homework or tests, they may have vision problems. Common issues include the inability to focus or team the eyes together properly called convergence insufficiency or trouble sustaining focus for extended periods of time called accommodative insufficiency.  Some children are farsighted, nearsighted, or have astigmatism that affects the ability of the eyes to see clearly.   All children should have an eye examination before entering school for the first time to make sure their visual system is functioning as expected.  Reading can be very difficult or impossible when there is an undetected vision issue.   For example, you may notice that their grades are lower than usual or they avoid reading or reading is very slow.

Help Your Child Be Happier

Living with poor vision can restrict your child in many ways. For one thing, kids can lack self-confidence from not socializing normally or achieving good grades in school. This can make your child feel depressed or experience a lower quality of life in other ways.  Undetected eye issues like an eye turn can prevent the normal eye development of proper vision.  If not treated, the vision may never be 20/20 and this can last a lifetime.  Now they may be restricted from certain professions as an adult due to poor vision.  If nearsightedness is detected, there are treatments for controlling the development of myopia in children before it gets extremely significant. We can slow down or stop the progression with treatments such as orthokeratology.

You May Not Know Something's Wrong

Vision problems can be difficult to detect in your child. How do they know that they can’t see like everyone else? Many children who get their first glasses tell us that they did not know there were individual leaves on trees!
