Glaucoma is an eye disease that slowly damages the optic nerve in the back of the eye, which is responsible for relaying visual information to your brain. If glaucoma is left untreated, this can lead to progressive, non-painful, permanent vision loss. In early stages of glaucoma, the patient has no symptoms and their vision seems completely normal. Therefore it is essential to maintain regular eye exams that include routine glaucoma testing. As glaucoma progresses, areas in the peripheral vision slowly lose sensitivity and small areas of blind spots occur. At that point, patients can be aware of the vision changes occurring. At Vision Solutions in La Mesa, we perform glaucoma testing during our comprehensive eye examinations for patients of all ages. While it cannot be cured, glaucoma can be managed when diagnosed early.

Causes of Glaucoma

One risk factor for developing glaucoma is increased intraocular pressure in the eye from excess fluid buildup. The theory is that the aqueous humor produced in the eye drains slowly causing an eye pressure elevation. Pressure elevation damages the optic nerve fibers and creates loss of vision. Another risk factor is your race. Glaucoma has a higher incidence in Black and Hispanic people. Also, smokers have a higher risk of glaucoma development. All people over age 60 have a higher risk, especially those with a history of glaucoma in the family. Our eye care services include glaucoma testing, treatment, and management of this condition.

Types of Glaucoma

  • Open angle glaucoma
  • Normal tension glaucoma
  • Angle closure glaucoma
  • Pseudoexfoliation glaucoma

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Unfortunately, glaucoma has very few symptoms, especially in the early stages. Symptoms of glaucoma may include:

  • Needing more light to see well
  • Blurry vision

These symptoms are also common in other eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with our San Diego optometrist immediately. We will perform a series of tests to make an accurate diagnosis, including gonioscopy, pachymetry, tonometry, visual field, and OCT testing. We will also look at the condition of your optic nerve. If we diagnose you with glaucoma, we will determine which kind of glaucoma you have and what is the appropriate treatment. Treatment varies, but the most common treatment is prescription eye drops taken daily to lower your eye pressure.
