Myopia-Control Lens FAQs: Helping Kids See Clearly While Slowing Myopia Progression

Myopia-Control Lens FAQs: Helping Kids See Clearly While Slowing Myopia Progression

At Vision Solutions Optometry in La Mesa, CA, many parents ask about myopia control for their children. Myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when the eye grows too long, causing distant objects to appear blurry. If left unmanaged, myopia can progress over time, increasing the risk of eye conditions later in life. If you are seeking a pediatric optometrist near you who offers specialized myopia management, our team is here to help. We’ve answered some of the most common questions parents have about myopia-control lenses, how they work, and what options are available to keep your child’s vision healthy.

What Are Myopia-Control Lenses?

Myopia-control lenses are specially designed eyeglasses, contact lenses, or orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses that slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. Unlike standard corrective lenses, these lenses are engineered to slow the growth and lengthening of young eyes therefore slowing the rate of myopia development.   Specially formulated eye drops can also slow the rate of lengthening of the eyes.

Who Can Benefit from Myopia Management?

Children whose vision is rapidly changing, or who have excessive screen time, or who have a strong family history of myopia, may benefit most from myopia control. Early intervention can significantly slow the progression of nearsightedness and reduce the risk of high myopia later in life.  Higher myopia can put a person at risk for many eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachments.

What are the Types of Myopia-Control Lenses?

Our pediatric eye care team provides a variety of myopia-control options:

Eyeglasses: Specially designed lenses for daily wear that provide a peripheral zone of defocus in front of the retina which acts as a signal to slow myopia.   The recommendation is to wear these lenses at least 10 hours per day.

Contact Lenses: Soft contact lenses created for myopia control that also provide a peripheral zone of defocus in front of the retina slowing myopia and providing convenience of no glasses wear.

Scleral Contacts: Larger, custom-fit lenses that rest on the sclera, not the cornea, which can create a zone of defocus in the periphery of the vision  and allow for clear vision while slowing myopia development.

Ortho-K (Orthokeratology) Lenses:Overnight lenses that temporarily reshape the cornea, allowing children to see clearly during the day without glasses or contacts.  They also create the zone of defocus signaling the eye to not lengthen and create more myopia.

How Often Should My Child Have Eye Exams?

Regular eye exams are essential for children using myopia-control lenses. Our eye doctor recommends frequent checkups to monitor vision changes, monitor the axial length of the eye, ensure proper fit, and adjust treatment as needed. Early and consistent monitoring helps maximize the benefits of myopia management.
